An Important Message on University Applications
Dear Parents and Boys,
At Aitchison College, integrity is one of our core values. It defines our academics, our conduct, and our reputation. The university admissions process is no exception. How a boy presents himself to the world must reflect the same honesty and character we expect of him within our gates.
In recent conversations with Admissions Officers at leading universities particularly in the United States, and through regular contact with universities in the UK and Canada, a clear and repeated concern has been shared. They are encountering applications from high school students that seem implausibly accomplished, excessively polished, or written in a voice that does not ring true for a young person. When a résumé reads like that of a seasoned executive, or an essay feels manufactured rather than lived, it raises doubts. And when credibility is questioned, scrutiny follows.
Universities are not searching for perfection. They are looking for authenticity, intellectual curiosity, sustained commitment, and evidence of character. They understand what is reasonable for a 17 or 18-year-old to have achieved. When an application feels engineered rather than earned, it raises concerns, and has led to strict action taken against the student and at times the school. We at Aitchison College have the best intentions at heart for our boys. Our guidance & counseling teams work diligently to advise students on building strong profiles and finding the best fit universities for them, considering their overall achievements and accomplishments.
Most admission officers are highly adept at recognizing externally produced or heavily managed applications. Patterns emerge quickly across thousands of files. Our concern is the growing reliance on private counseling, whereby students end up paying phenomenal amounts just to get their applications tailor-made to ‘questionable perfection’, lacking credibility and authenticity. Furthermore, public association with private counselors, particularly when promoted on social media, only reinforces suspicion of third-party involvement.
External/Private counsellors are businesses motivated by their pursuit of profits, not their students’ well-being. Aitchison’s Guidance and Counselling Departments, by contrast, exist solely for the benefit of our boys and their bright futures. We maintain direct relationships with universities, remain current with admission trends and expectations, and guide students through both admissions and financial aid/scholarships with one principle at the forefront: present your story truthfully and thoughtfully.
Authenticity and credibility is the foundation of every successful application.
In practical terms, that means:
- Conduct your own, thorough research into institutions and courses.
- Choose universities that genuinely align with your interests and strengths.
- Write your own essays/personal statements.
- Reflect honestly on what you have actually done and learned.
- Seek guidance from your school counsellor, revise carefully, and improve through feedback.
- Allow your achievements to speak for themselves, without embellishment.
It is not glamorous. It requires time. It demands thought. But it works.
There is no substitute for a sincere voice and a record of sustained, meaningful engagement. Universities admit young men, not marketing campaigns.
Aitchison’s Guidance and Counselling Departments stand fully prepared to support every student through university selection, application strategy, essay refinement, documentation, and financial aid/scholarships/bursaries. We will advise, challenge, and review…but we will not do the work for him. That responsibility, and that honour, must remain his.
An Aitchisonian stands on his own merit. Our reputation with universities has been built over generations on trust and authenticity. Let us ensure that it remains so.
