OBITUARY
MR. ASHIQ HUSSAIN QURESHI PASSES AWAY
The old boy and founder of Pakistan Veterans Cricket Association passed away on
Thursday the 31st of October 2019.
The late Ashiq Hussain Qureshi joined Aitchison College in 1955. He was the eldest son
of former Governor of Punjab, Nawab Sadiq Hussain Qureshi. The late Qureshi served
inthe Armoured Corps Regiment Probyns Horse and the Foreign Service as adiplomat
in Paris and London. As Honorary Consul of France in Lahore, he was awarded the
highest French Honour, Ordre National du Mérite.
Ashiq was an avid sportsman and philanthropist, who worked tirelessly to bring about a
positive change for youth through sports.
As ayoung boy, he won 100 and 200 metre races several times on a national level and
played in the National under 19 cricket team. He became Chairman P & T Gymkhana
and later played a vital role in the development of Lahore city cricket. For the last two
decades, he managed and organised veterans’ cricket in the country and took it
international. He initiated veterans’ cricket to help former cricketers financially and to
keep them physically fit. The organization is also committed to the development and
upbringing of young cricketers at the grassroots level. He also supported development
of sports and cricket grounds and infrastructure in remote and rural areas, as well as
cities, and developed aculture of indigenous sports patronage.
He was not just a good cricket player but also a philanthropist. One of the founding members of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, Shaukat
Khanum Hospital, Imran Khan Foundation and Namal College. On the sorrowful event of his death, the Prime Minister said that Ashiq
Qureshi was the first to stand by him when he had decided to build Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust Hospital.
‘Your enthusiasm and positive approach to life was our encouragement. Dear friend, when we opened the new Jafar Memorial Ground, it was as
you envisaged, but minus the joy of seeing your face and listening to your prophetic words. It was you who led the way and you who filled us with
the resolve to take on all challenges regardless of obstacles. Now, we pray for your everlasting peace, great servant of youth, Aitchison College
