The College is very firm in its stance against the use of mobile phones and other social media at school. We were the first school to ban mobiles and unauthorised use is dealt with harshly. However, technology is here to stay -and expanding - and we simply must accept that placed in the hands of children and adolescents, it has the potential to bring out both the 'best and worst'. Technology needs to be supervised or monitored in the case of younger boys, so that good habits and expectations are established early in life. Generally, parents need to talk to their boys about what is acceptable or appropriate use. In the case of Day boys this task cannot be simply off-loaded to school. School cannot control abuses of technology beyond its gates. As much as we educate boys to be responsible and caution them about what is and is not appropriate public behaviour, we need families to be vigilant and set clear standards, as of course most already do.The single greatest case for mobiles at school is 'security after school' and receiving important notifications from home. That's it. Suffice to say that Aitchison College strongly opposes harassment and bullying of any kind and has established a very safe and friendly campus across three schools. Obviously, we have zero tolerance when it comes to unlawful or repugnant behaviour or actions that damage the school's reputation in the public domain, which extends to all forms of social media. Boys who transgress these boundaries of 'decency' have no place here. Boys who set out to ridicule or oppress others will be moved on quickly. Boys who do not buy into the culture of Aitchison have no place here.
