Dear Parents,
I am writing to share an important development in Aitchison College’s ongoing commitment to character development and student wellbeing. We have introduced Aitchison’s first formal Policy on Disruptive Social Behaviour, addressing bullying, hazing, and harassment. These behaviours deeply undermine our values, violate our code of conduct, and create a hostile learning environment by undermining the safety and dignity of the student body.
This policy reflects our broader mission: to prepare Aitchisonians not only for positions of excellence, but for lives of purpose, leadership, and responsibility. It sets out clear definitions, preventive strategies, and detailed procedures for reporting, investigating, and addressing incidents. Sanctions are outlined based on the severity of the behaviour, with an emphasis on education, accountability, and consistency.
The policy is the result of a comprehensive and consultative process. We studied national and international best practices, reviewed the experiences of other schools, and engaged internal and external educators. A dedicated working group comprising members from the administration, Teaching & Learning Centre, boarding houses, discipline committees, and staff from all three schools ensured the policy is both meaningful and contextually grounded. It will be reviewed annually to remain responsive and relevant.
Crucially, the policy recognizes that the responsibility for a respectful school culture is a shared one. Preventing and addressing harmful behaviours requires a united effort from students, staff, and parents. I want to emphasise that character is not situational, it is exhibited in all spheres of life. An Aitchisonian is expected to uphold our values not only within the College gates, but at home, online, and in the wider community. Therefore, the College reserves the right to review out-of-school disruptive behaviour and sanction within the premises accordingly.
Your role as parents is vital. I ask for your support in reinforcing the values of courtesy and empathy at home, encouraging your sons to speak up when they or others feel unsafe, and maintaining open lines of communication with us. Importantly, I urge you to understand and fulfil the expectations that the college has from you as parents, as outlined in the policy.
At its core, this policy is not about punishment - it is about growth. I firmly believe that the purpose of education is to help students become good human beings. With your continued partnership, we can help our boys develop the character that will serve them well throughout their lives, both personally and professionally.
Yours sincerely,
Dr. S.M. Turab Hussain
