CRICKET TOUR OF ENGLAND
A RESOUNDING SUCCESS
Aitchisonians defeat top English schools
in exceptional display of cricket
Asquad of 15 players of Aitchison College won 5 out of 6 matches against 5 top English schools and a South African cricket academy
on their cricket tour of England from 19th - 30th June, 2018. Our boys played matches against St Edwards College, Oratory School
and South African Leopards Academy at Oratory School, Marlborough College, Eton College and Wellington College.
Aitchison College is synonymous to the word 'cricket' having produced eleven Test players -names included in which are: Iftikhar Ali
Khan Pataudi (England and India), Imran Khan, Majid and Bazid Khan, and RameezRaja (Pakistan). On that basis alone, one would
presume that the recently completed tour of England was always going to be successful, but Principal Michael Thomson says the
results were never straight-forward in matches played against top schools. “Five wins from six games in 9 days in unfamiliar
conditions and immediately following Ramzan tested the boys thoroughly. Obviously victories against Eton and Wellington register
high onthe list of accomplishments, but so too did our one loss against St Edwards that demanded alot of maturity to get close ina big
run chase. Improvement doesn't always come from winning’ he says. “It also comes from analysing how you come up short. | suppose
also when you consider that Eton had just won against Harrow in their annual game at Lords, our boys have been able to represent
their country in circles that stand up and take notice.”
He credits the successful performance of the team not only to a talented squad of players but also to the skills and leadership of
Director of Cricket Jon Wright and Ist Xl coach Mohammed Riaz who between them have done much to establish a cricket academy
of excellence reaching down to boys as young as eleven. The standout players with the bat of tour were the son of Inzaman-ul-Haq,
Ibtesam-ul- Haq, and Naail Dar who both scored centuries -the latter ina T20 match. All-rounder Hasnat Abbass and fellow spinner
Faridoun Jaffri also look to be great future prospects. As with many teams from the sub-continent, spin played a large part in
Aitchison's success. In all games the boys stood firm to pressure situations with bat, ball and inthe field.
For Aitchison, it was a tour that offered cultural exchange and the promise of learning more about cricket. The tour is seen as part of
the College's determined push for global recognition and relevance, as evidenced by its invitation to join the prestigious Worldwide
G20 Group of Schools’ - the only school in Pakistan to have achieved this distinction.
