As to accommodation, the three hostels can oasily be converted to the
‘‘ ommion messing and dormitory system”, as has been introduced in
Rajkumar College, Rajkot. Such convorsion would entail vory little expendi-
ture and would provide accommodation for about 175 boys. There is plenty
of playing field accommodation,
Howover, liberalisation of admission would perhaps be disliked by the
Ruling ond land-owning classes.
It may perhaps be worth considering the concentration of ell Chiefs’ sons
and relatives and of tho Enplish staff at present scattered over the five
Colleges in one Colloge, loaving tho other four colleges to the aristocratic
families and the upper middle class.
This would provide for the futuro Rulers of Indian States such an
education as willnot mercly fit them to pass examinations but will producs
woll-mannored, cultured gentlemen in whom the principles of honour and
sportsmanshir have been inculeated by precept and example. Then the
ordinary standard based on oxamination results might be given up for the
Chicfs’ College and‘ x sonse of suporiority ’ tempered by the precept and
oxample of English masters and by the levelling influence of sport cultivated
to the satisfaction of the Princes and to the bonofit of fufure generations
of Rulers.

MIR SAEED ALAM KHAN,
Under Secretary to the Hon'ble the Agent to
the Governor General, Punjab States,
MAYO COLLEGE, AJMER.
I visitod Mayo College, Ajmer, on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday,
Fobruary the 19th, 20th and 2ist, 1934, respectively. Captain D. G.
de la Farguo was associated with tho inspection in his capacity asa political
officer, Our task was much facilitated by the statistical and other informa-
tion which had been propared by Mr. V. A. 8. Stow, the Principal.
2. The College owos much to tho vitalising influence of its Principal
who has not only introduced changos of far-reaching importance and
valué, but has impressed his personality upon ovory dotail of its organisn-
tion. I¢ is the moro nocessary, therefore, to presorve coutinuity of
orgdnisation so that its smooth working shall become automatic ond not be
dopendont upon 6 single individual.
3. Though tho Colloge possesses valuable assets, it suffers from serious
defects. It is also passing through a critic] period of transition, which is
common to all calloges of this typo. It is thorofore nocessary to approciate
not only tho position of individual colleges, but also thoir relations with each
other. Thore is scarcoly room in India for as many as five such colleges,
cach with similar objectives. The decreasing onrolmont in meny of tho
colleges givcs cause for anxious considoration. ys
4. The ralos for admission te Mayo College are both rigid and oxclusive-
The right of nominating boys for admission lios in tho, first instance with
contributors to the endowment ; apoit from Ruling Princos and. their relations, .
only the'sones of landholders of particular ranks aro oligiblo for admission.
It is at least opon to argument that an institution based on so limited a field
ot rocruitment is out of hatmony with modorn developments and that boys,
howover favourably’ circunistanced in life, would’ bonofit by a wider
environmont. On'the other hand, the origin and traditions of tho Colloge
should not pass unheeded. ' Ii, however, the Calloge is to be continued along
the lines ‘of past tradition, the onrolmont of boys should at least be
suffitiontly largo not only to meet its financial obligations, but also to onable
its govern) activities, both inside and outside the class-rooms, to be carried
out offcotively. Poucity of-numbors is a grave disddvantage to hoilthy
development.. : .
