and Rs. 3,000 per annum according to the incomes of their parents. In Ajmor
House bovs'ladging foes range from Rs. 144 to Rs. 432 according to. tha
incomes of thoir paronts; apparontly, in the States boarding houses, no
lodging feos are imposed.
Thoso varying rates of foos nood reconsidoration. The amounts received
by the College from Rajputann boys and, to a lessor oxtont, from Central
India boys aro insignificant in comparison with tho services rondered. Itisa
sound maxim that what is not adequatoly pnid for is not sufficicntly valued
and respocted. Besides, the financial condition of tho College would be more
healthy if the fees of pupils formed a larger proportion of the revenues,
The vory high feos lovied from boys coming from outside Rajputana and
Contral Indie also constitule a dangor. Tho temptation to admit such boys,
howovor unsuitable thoy may be for admission, must be almost overpoworing.
13. A furthor defect of the Collogo lies in its staff. The Colloge suffered
a snd and sovero loss through the death of Mr. G. Hf. Tidswell owing to a fatal
motor accident ; his vacancy has beon temporarily filled by the appointment of
Mr. H. K. Kofford, guardian to tho Kumars of Dundlodo Stato ; arrangomonta
aro boing made to recruit a pormanont successor.
14. Tho staff comprises cighteen masters in all, including tho Principal
hut excluding the soparate houso masters, the games staff and tho physical
training instructor. Assistance is also rondercd by cortain guardians of boys
for a fow poriods in each week.
Numerically, a staf of cighteon mastors is amplo for the normal teaching
requiroments of 140 boys ; it is possibly ovor-gencrous, In any easo, provided
that certain conditions woro fulfilled, tho numbor of boys could bo further
increased without additions to tho staff.
15. It is the moro surprising, thoroforo, that tho baneful practico of
privato tuition is still provalont in spite of tho efforts of tho Principal to dis-
conrago it, At the time of inspoction somo forty boys wore being assisted by
private tutors. This additional assistance is often unnocessary and is
an oxtravagance ; it ig also an obstacle to gaod clnss-teaching as well as to the
progress of the boys conerrned. An almost inevitablo effoct is that 2 boy
tands to depend unduly upon others and thus loses in inifintivo and soli-
rolinnee. If the teaching of the Callege is to be placed on a firm foundation,
this harmful practice should be climinated ; moreover, with tho money saved
tho teaching could be improved as n result of higher fees, while the actual cost
to the parents concornod would be materially reduced.
16, The weakness of the staff ig due mainly to lack of professional skill
and wire axpericnee. Only two out of oightecn masters have recoived pro-
fessional training ; and in making recent appointments it has not beon found
possiblo Lo reduce this sorians doficiency. Tf suitable racruits are not availabla
from among those who have racoived training, the condition might bo imposed
on now recruits that thoy shall undergo a course of training before, or shortly
after, taking up their appointments.
17, Very fow mombors of tha staff have hed experience in other insti-
tutions besides Mayo Colloga itsolf. Thero ie always a danger that a master
whovis none too well-qualified in other respects and who sponds his whole
career inthe samo institution, may bocome unrecoptive of now idoas and
lifoloss and unimaginative in tho class-room.
Twas confirmed inthis fear by my visitsta tha class-rooms. Tho teach-
ing, espocially in the junior classes, was often lacking in professional skill.
Though considerable care is devoted to tho correction of exoreiso hooks,
teaching by oral methods would he moro desirable and effective. A hoy
is far mora likely to avoid tho ropotition of mistake which is pointed aut to
him at the moment of commission than ho is in respoct to errors corrected in
an oxerciso book anc handod to him Intor.
18, Tho laele of wide oxperiones has recently been aceantaited hy tho
provision that cach Chiefs" Collogo shall bo a self-contained unit, vach with
its own foparate cadro of mastors, Thoro is thus li{tle opportunity of ing
torchango. Contracts shonld thoroforo bo so arranged that the sorvicos of
unsatisfactory mastors can be disponsod with,
