There are favo hoarding houses in which pupils live without any regard
to age classification. So far as may be practicable the separation of the
older and younger boys in these houses, the latter under the charge of a
competent matron, appears to be very desirable. Secondly there is a dis-
tinction of rank and wealth that can surely have only the worst results.
In one room there are beds, aud literally nothing else, for some dozen of
the more humble and poor students who are of all ages and have nobody
in charge of them. Within sight of this room there are other reoms with
beds for three pupils and a guardian and likewise a sitting room. These are
lavishly furnished, with casy-chairs, rich-covers, carpets, a wireless and
gramophones, The contrast is abrupt and unpleasant.
A valiant attempt has been made to break-down the system of private
feeding by the substitution of a common mess on normal lines. Jt has
met so far with modified snecess. There are occasions where boys eat in
kitchers of which the windows are so ditty that no light can enter. The
common messing kitehen recently inaugurated, forms a pleasing contrast.
Both boarding houses are over run with servants and tutors of every kind
and description. Iam told that the sanitary arrangements are primitive
and in the rains shocking. ;
Toused and fed in such circumstances it is surprising that any good
results can be obtained, That they have been has been due to the devotion
and enthusiasm of masters working under difficulties that mmst. surely
render any sort of discipline almost impossible and without discipline in
a schon] I do not see how the young idea is to be brought wp in the way it
should go. I am well aware that in the past any attempt to democratize
the College would have quickly emptied it but in times that are changing
so quickly the Daly College cannot be allowed to suffer from a time lag and
once the intention of the authorities has heen made clear one may reasonably
hope fie support from the Princes and where they lead the smaller Chicfs
and Thakers, offen the most conservative of all, are bound to follow.
T would mention that on my first visit last year T was astounded to
find neither a swimming bath ner a drawing class. There is good reason
to hope that the former may be available in a year or so. J think also
that ivan English public school one would notice with surprise the
absence of facilitics for learning carpentry.
5. Jn conclusion may 1 express the opinion that there should he no douht
in anylody's mind as to the future success of the Daly College. The stage
js eet for’ success, The buildings arc handsome and situated amidst fine
surroundings, The climate is healthy and free from the extreme heat of
the Indian plains. The recruiting ground could be sufficient in Central
India itself while the fact of the Residency being in the same place should
constitute an added attraction to Princes and Chiefs who find themselves
agreeably able to combine a visit 40 their children with one to their chief
political officer who is also, the Visitor of the College.
