Units of Measure
The metric system is the international standard for assigning units to different
quantities to measure them. The table below shows these quantities and the
different units used to measure them, as well as the prefixes commonly used
for each:
Quantity
Units
Common Prefixes
Mass
g (gram)
k (kilo)
Length
m (metre)
m (milli), c (centi),
k (kilo)
Area
m2 (square metre) m (milli), c (centi),
k (kilo)
Volume
m3 (cubic metre)
m (milli), c (centi)
Volume/Capacity
l (litre)
m (milli)
Note: a cubic centimetre is the same value as a millilitre.
The following table shows the indices represented by each prefix:
Prefix
Indice Factor
m (milli)
10-3 (1/1000)
c (centi)
10-2 (1/100)
k (kilo)
103 (1,000)
To convert from one unit to another, these factors are taken into account. To
convert from a smaller unit to a bigger one, the value is divided, whereas to
convert from a bigger unit to a small one, the value is multiplied. For example,
to convert from centimetres to kilometres, the value is divided by 100,000.
When dealing with square or cubic values, the factor is squared or cubed
