forces, has led to some degree of doubt about Russia’s ability to defend its newly-annexed
territories against Ukraine, and even possibly win the war. Such a performance has also led to
a reduction in Russia’s international prestige and that of its armed forces, which are ranked as
the second-best in the world after the United States, also stirring up considerations to the fact
that whether Russia was even fit to be referred to as a ‘great power’. The fact that if Russia
was to be on the back end of a Ukrainian counter-offensive and on the road to failure in
Ukraine, it is evident that it would indeed resolve the use of nuclear weapons.
This can be evidenced by former Russian President and Deputy Head of Russia’s Security
Council, Dmitry Medvedev stating :
"Imagine if the offensive, which is backed by NATO, was a success and they tore off a part of
our land then we would be forced to use a nuclear weapon according to the rules of a decree
from the president of Russia…”
Such a statement clearly proves that Russia would use a nuclear weapon in Ukraine, were it
in a situation where things aren’t going particularly well for Russia’s military, since Russia
considers it a step too far to lose control of its newly-annexed regions or more importantly,
the Crimean Peninsula, something that Ukraine is looking to accomplish with its military
operation, meaning that any sort of loss would incite a Russian nuclear response.
In addition, Vladimir Putin has also previously stated that he will go to any heights and utilise
all necessary means to defend Russia’s territorial integrity, as proven by this statement
(translated):
“...We will defend our land using all forces at our disposal and will do everything we can to
protect the security of our people.”
The fact that the President of Russia is willing to not only give a statement, but reinforce it
many times, that the Russian Federation would go to any lengths to defend its territory and
people from outside assailants, justifying it by claiming their sovereignty over the Donbas
region just because most of the people living there are ethnic Russians which, clearly exhibits
not only a resolve but a preeminent justification to a possible Russian nuclear attack in
Ukraine, presently which does seem to be the case, with Ukraine trying to advance past
Russia’s defensive lines and in the process trying to accomplish a feat which would be
unacceptable and vastly humiliating to the Russians such as the capture of Crimea or an
advance towards the Azov Sea, which would greatly raise the chances for a nuclear
retribution against them by the Russians.
Actions that further prove such a mindset such as openly deploying tactical nuclear weapons
in Belarus, also highlight that Russia is indeed very much serious about its nuclear ambitions
and is trying to send a message from Russia to both NATO and Ukraine, that it has little
hesitation and only so many barriers in their resolve to use their nuclear weapons, be it in
Ukraine which would be more likely in order to ensure a swift conclusion to the war-effort on
Russia’s peace terms and a complete decimation of the Ukrainian struggle to resist and hastier
integration, saving the lives of Russian soldiers which have been stuck in the frontlines for
months and upon whose deaths, pressure would be possibly exerted by the public on Mr
