Dr. RezaBaqir Old Aitchisonian, currently Senior
Fellow at Harvard Kennedy School of Government
in Cambridge, MA (USA), and former Governor of
the State Bank of Pakistan. Dr. Baqir served as the
Governor of Pakistan's central bank during from
May 2019 to May 2022. He introduced several
digitization initiatives in Pakistan's financial sector
including Roshan Digital Accounts for overseas
Pakistanis, reforms in the foreign exchange
regulations that spurred a new wave of investments
in startups and fintechs, Raast—an instant and free
digital payment system, and a licensing framework
for digital banks. Previously, Dr. Baqir held senior
positions with the International Monetary Fund
(2000-19) based in Washington, Egypt, and the
Philippines, and the World Bank (1993-95). He was
the Head of the IMFs Office in Egypt and Senior

Resident Representative during 2017-19. He was Division Chief of the IMF's Debt Policy Division for four
years overseeing IMF's policy and country work on sovereign debt restructuring and debt sustainability.
Dr. Baqir attended Aitchison from 1976-1988.He was one of the most prominent students and was a
multiple award holder: Head Boy, Full College Blazer, Rivaz Gold Medal, Dane Bhima Gold Medal (1986),
Babar House Badge for Academics, Babar House Colours for Academics (1984, 1985 and 1987), and
2nd position in College in S.C. examinations 1986. Dr. Baqir was also appointed to several responsible
positions including College Prefect and President College Election Society for the years 1985-1986.
After graduating from Aitchison College, Dr. Baqir, obtained an A.B. (Magna Cum Laude) form Harvard
University in Cambridge, MA (USA) and a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of California at
Berkeley, CA (USA). Dr. RezaBaqir shares his experience at Aitchison College and his feelings for his
alma mater in his own words.
