Old Aitchisonian Professor Rehman Sobhan is the Chairman of Centre for Policy
Dialogue (CPD). Prof. Rehman was also the leader of the opposition in the Council of
State in 1952. He was involved in the struggle for democracy and against injustice,
which culminated in the emergence of an independent Bangladesh. These issues
continue to motivate his professional life and inspire him to pen down his thoughts
which he has published as well.
He was a student at Aitchison for the HSC class 1951-52. During his time it was the
leading educational institution in what was then West Pakistan. It provided a well-
rounded educational experience with exceptional facilities for learning, living, sports
and extracurricular activities. Among his fond memories were the times he spent in
Godley House with fellow HSC students and connected him to influential teachers like
Mr. Gwyn, the Principal and Mr. Pinson, Housemaster of Kelly House; whose English
lessons are still engrained in his memory. At Aitchison, he earned the Churchill House
Medal, Hockey colours and was a Prefect at Kelly House. He was one of the best
Hockey players. After studying from Aitchison he spent 3 years at University of Cambridge from 1953-56 where he obtained a
degree in economics. He was elected President of the Cambridge Majlis. Later on, he chose to teach economics at Dhaka
University finally retiring as a Professor, a profession that he had gained interest in during his time at Cambridge. Professor
Rehman later served as Director General of the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS).
As a message for other alumni Professor Rehman Sobhan duly emphasizes on always demonstrating empathy for the less
privileged sections of our society. Surely little empathy can go a long way.
