We put on clothes, scroll through
Instagram or snack every day—without
giving it a second thought about the big
companies behind them. From Apple
and Nike to Netflix and Oreo, these
companies
didn't
fall
into
place
overnight. Behind each of them is a
dream and then a tale of great
decisions,
excellent
marketing,
and
individuals who knew how to make
ideas into a successful business. But
how in the world did we come to make
these brands our favorites., and how do
they make so much money doing it?
It's Not Just a Logo – It's a Brand
When you consider McDonald's, what
pops into your mind immediately?
Perhaps it's the big M, the fries, or even
Ronald
Mcdonald.
That's
not
coincidence, it's all branding. A brand is
something greater than a name or logo.
It's the way a company makes you feel.
Apple or Pepsi pay millions to create a
certain image in your head. Apple wants
you to feel that their products are
streamlined, cool, and simple. Oreo
wants you to feel happy and nostalgic.
That emotional feeling is strong—and
it's what brings people back. Big
companies
emphasize
design,
packaging, and persona to differentiate.
Consider how much different a Red Bull
can appears from a regular energy
drink. Or how Starbucks has your name
on the cup (even if they get it wrong).
These little details make the customer
feel more attached to their product.
Marketing: The Special Art
Great products aren’t the full story. Even
the best product can fail if no one
knows about it. That’s where marketing
comes in. Marketing is how companies
tell the world about their brand. And the
best brands know exactly how to speak
to their audience.
take Nike’s famous slogan: “Just Do It.”
Simple,
powerful,
and
motivational.
Even if you’ve never played a sport, the
message just hits. Now, with social
media, marketing has come to an
entirely new level. Brands no longer just
place adverts on television. They're on
TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and even
your favorite Spotify playlists. They
collaborate
with
influencers
who
already have the trust and attention of
their audience. Like, a beauty brand will
collaborate with a celebrity or popular
YouTuber to give their products a
review. If that influential individual loves
it, there are going to be thousands of
people who will test it out, and that
creates millions in sales.
From Idea to Empire: How They Make
Money
So how does your favorite brand make
money, then? It begins with a humble
idea, but it takes a lot more than that to
create a large setup. Let's assume that
one has a new snack idea. They first
determine what's unique about their
snack, perhaps it is more healthy,
crisper, or more enjoyable than others.
That's the "unique selling point." They
then test it with some individuals
(friends or neighborhood stores). If the
people enjoy it, they go into production
and selling.
But producing the product is only half
the battle. Companies must consider:
1. Pricing – Too expensive and nobody
will buy it. Too cheap and they don't
profit.
