The Haunted Escape
Musa Khudadad Khan

“We are not the ones to be fooled, as we seek the hidden truth!” said
Caswell, as he dramatically showcased the stance of his side, in our school’s debating soci-
ety. We all had to stay back till 9:30 pm to host the participating schools, but I was not yet a
rule-follower. Requesting a break, Caswell and I hopped on his bike and were heading to my
house, sneakily skipping the rest of the event.
“Oh, your speech was sure a winner,” I assured, as we talked about it. Caswell gave a shiny
grin, but it soon turned into an empty expression as he lifted his finger, towards the gravel
path separating the road. A man, covered in black, was staring into our souls.
“What-,” whispered Caswell in a shaky voice before I shushed him. I knew there was some-
thing behind this. Nobody stands in the middle of an empty road at this time- at any time,
for no purpose. So, we kept our attention away, and continued our path, amidst the black
sky, and empty surroundings.
This time, we saw three people in the same black coats, with heavy black silk pants. Their
faces were covered in the same black mask, with a strange owl logo on them. Suddenly, a
shiver went down our spines. We were petrified as the three seemingly cult members point-
ed at us, as if they knew us, as if they were waiting for us.
“GO, GO!” I yelled out, before Caswell increased our speed in fear. We wanted to get out of
this no-ending road as soon as possible. We saw our exit blocked, by a massive cascade of
fearful masked cults. We shivered and leapt with fear. We got off Caswell’s bike and ran into
the abandoned forest bordering this road. Scarily enough, the forest was covered in shad-
ows, and complete darkness.
We ran and didn’t stop for miles with chaotic screams and chasing behind us. We thought it
was indeed the end of our flight, when we heard genuine unsheathing of daggers, or even
possible foot-long swords! That was until a meet of salt was at sight. It shined in the dark,
and seemed as if it was a means of separating something, and as we hesitated to cross it, the
possible cannibals were coming to a slightly unnoticeable halt, which made Caswell and me
to cross it.
We were awestruck as the wild ones behind us suddenly slapped themselves against an impossible
invisible wall, possibly created by the strange spread of salt. At last, we were somewhat relived, as I
took a sigh, and gazed upon the crowd of these mysterious clans.
