The Mighty Niagara Falls

A visit to Niagara Falls offers an incredible view of one of the world’s most powerful
natural wonders. This year, during summer holidays, I got the opportunity to visit the American side of the falls.
Niagara Falls was one of the places I had always hoped to see and it lived up to the expectations. It’s a remarkable
place to experience in person.
Our journey began with a big blue tour bus from New York to the city of Buffalo, and believe me, when people
say that New York is the city that never sleeps, they mean it, because we had to catch our bus at 4AM, in the morn-
ing, with the trip itself lasting about 7 to 8 hours, which although tiring was a new and exciting experience.
The tour bus although having the final destination of the city of Buffalo went through several states such as, New
York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. We had a bilingual tour guide with us the entire time who informed us
about the surroundings we passed through during our trip. The scenic views were mesmerizing with lush fields
and meadows of the country side, with charming and peaceful houses along with small towns scattered across the
scenery. Moreover, for some of the trip we passed by rivers and streams, patches of dense forest covering rolling
hills together with minor mountains. During the early hours of the trip we even got to witness a magnificent
sunrise that filled the sky with a yellow and purple hue as it slowly illuminated the night sky and our surround-
ings. Halfway through the trip we stopped at the town of Corning, which as we were told by our tour guide is the
home of the Rockwell Museum and the town of Corning itself is known for being an efficient and strong glass and
ceramics manufacturers’ hub.
At around 11AM, we finally reached the town of Buffalo and thus, the Niagara Falls State Park. When you first
arrive you can hear the thunderous roar of the water even before you see the falls. The Niagara Falls can be broken
up into three different waterfalls, the largest of the three, Horseshoe Falls which is dominantly in Canada, The
American Falls the second largest and contained completely within America, and the Bridal Veil Falls the smallest
of the three and also within the American Border. Our first activity was to visit the various overlooking spots
around the water falls which was part of Goat Island and Luna Island, both which separated the Bridal Veil and
Horseshoe Falls and the Bridal Veil and American Falls respectively, which offered countless photo opportunities
that captured the beauty and energy of this natural marvel.
One of the highlights is the Maid of the Mist boat tour, where you’re taken right to the base of each of the falls,
being within that splash zone of the Horseshoe Falls, where you can barely make out a thing with all the water
constantly being splashed on your face, coupled with the strong gusts of wind and sounds of waves splashing
against each other. It was like we were in an active thunderstorm, which only showed the grandeur of the water-
fall. Wearing a blue rain poncho, you can feel the cool mist on your face and see the falls up close, an absolutely
exhilarating and immersive experience.
Approaching the observation areas the sight of the rushing water is mesmerizing and the sheer scale of the falls
is awe-inspiring. Another popular spot is the Cave of the Winds, a wooden walkway at the foot of the Bridal Veil
Falls, where you can stand just feet away from the cascading water, feeling the power and spray all around you.
We then made a climb to a location called the Crow’s Nest which was a small lookout placed almost right within
the American and Bridal Veil Falls. The walk there was difficult as all the water constantly raining down on you
along with slippery rocks along the path made it difficult to see anything at all without covering your eyes and
ensuring every step was safe. Walking trails let you explore the area and take in views of the river and rapids
leading up to the falls. Visiting at sunset or night time is particularly magical as the falls are lit up in changing
colors. After all that, our trip was finally over and we made our way back to the bus shivering and cold only to be
greeted by an even colder bus filled with air conditioning.
In conclusion, my entire time at the Niagara Falls, even though it was short, was well spent and it was both exhila-
rating and a scenic unforgettable experience that I will most definitely cherish.
