Nuclei can emit 3 types of radiation, alpha(α), beta(β) or gamma(γ).
An alpha particle has 2 neutrons and protons and is positively charged.
A beta particle is an electron, emitted from inside the nucleus and is
negatively charged but with very little mass.
A gamma ray is a form of electromagnetic radiation with no mass or charge
and it is purely energy.
Out of these, alpha radiation has the most ionizing power, then beta
radiation and then gamma radiation but for penetrating power the order is
opposite.
