An object can only have weight when the planet it is on has
gravity, because weight is the effect of a gravitational field
on a mass, meaning it is the force of gravity with which a planet/star pulls a
mass towards itself.
On Earth, gravity pulls objects downwards, which is why they fall, and thus
why weight always acts downwards.
