Organic Chemistry
Organic Chemistry studies the structure, properties, and reactions of organic compounds (those
containing carbon).
Exceptions: Metal carbonates, CO₂, and CO are not considered organic compounds.
Hydrocarbons
Compounds containing only hydrogen and carbon atoms.
Displayed Formulae - Shows spatial arrangement of all atoms and bonds.
General Formulae - Shows composition for a homologous series.
Structural Formulae - Shows key bonds but omits most covalent bonds.
Example: Ethene : CH2 = CH2
Structural Isomers
Compounds with the same molecular formula but different atom arrangements.
Example of Structural Isomers
