Chemical Bonding
Ionic Bonding
• The type of bonding between metal and non-metal atom(s) is known as ionic
bonding
• The metal atom(s) lose their valence shell electrons to form positive ions.
They give their electrons to the non-metal atom(s) which then form negative
ions
• An ionic bond is the strong electrostatic forces of attraction between the
metal cations and the non-metal anions
• Ionic bonds are often graphically represented as dot-and-cross
diagrams, e.g. NaCl
