Minimizing the Effects of the Environmental Issues
Reducing Carbon Dioxide Emissions:
Measures to reduce atmospheric carbon emissions and combat climate change include becoming
more mindful consumers of energy. This involves using cleaner energy sources, like hydrogen and
renewables (solar or wind), instead of fossil fuels. Opting for fuel-efficient vehicles, such as electric
and hybrid cars, and reducing the number of vehicles on the road through public transport and
car-sharing can further reduce emissions. Recycling and reusing products derived from crude oil,
lowering household energy consumption (e.g., turning off lights and using efficient appliances),
and addressing deforestation by planting more trees or reforesting are also impactful steps.
Increased tree cover can absorb more atmospheric carbon dioxide through photosynthesis, helping
to balance greenhouse gas levels.
Reducing Methane Emissions:
Decrease livestock farming, as methane is released during the animals' digestion process.
Reducing Acid Rain:
Acid rain results from nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxide emissions. Its effects can be minimised by
reducing the production of these pollutants. Catalytic converters in vehicles can help by removing
nitrogen oxides from exhaust gases.
Reducing Sulfur Dioxide Emissions:
Sulfur dioxide emissions can be lowered by using fuels with minimal sulfur content. Another
effective method is flue gas desulfurization, the primary technique for reducing sulfur dioxide. In
this process, waste gases from coal-fired power plants are directed into a scrubbing chamber where
they are sprayed with a wet slurry of calcium oxide and calcium carbonate. These calcium
compounds react with sulfur dioxide, forming calcium sulfate as a byproduct.
