The Group VII trends include:
• Melting/Boiling points increase down the group.
• Density increases down the group.
• Reactivity decreases down the group.
• Colour becomes darker down the group.
e.g. of displacement reactions:
(Only a more reactive element can displace a less reactive element, it cannot occur the other way
around.)
Group VIII (Noble Gases/Group 0):
The Group VIII elements include:
• Helium (He)
• Neon (Ne)
• Argon (Ar)
• Krypton (Kr)
• Xenon (Xe)
• Radon (Rn)
They exist as monoatomic gases and are extremely unreactive as they have a stable electronic
configuration.
The Transition Elements
The Transition Elements are the elements found in between Group II and Group III of the
periodic table.
Some notable transition elements include:
• Iron (Fe)
• Copper (Cu)
• Cobalt (Co)
• Vanadium (V)
