- Hydrochloric acid produces salts ending in chloride (Cl⁻).
- Sulfuric acid produces salts ending in sulfate (SO₄²⁻).
- Nitric acid produces salts ending in nitrate (NO₃⁻)
Salt Solubility Table
Preparing Soluble Salts
There are two main methods for preparing soluble salts, depending on the nature of the reactants:
Method 1: Adding Acid to an Insoluble Substance (metal, base, or carbonate
Procedure:
1. Heat dilute acid in a beaker.
2. Gradually add an insoluble base, carbonate, or metal until no more dissolves and the excess is
visible in the beaker.
3. Filter the mixture to remove undissolved solids.
4. Heat the filtered solution to evaporate water and achieve saturation.
5. Allow the solution to cool for crystallization.
6. Collect the crystals, decant excess solution, and dry with filter paper.
Example: Preparing Copper(II) Sulfate Crystals
- Combine sulfuric acid with copper(II) oxide (CuO).
- CuO + H₂SO₄ → CuSO₄ + H₂O
Method 2: Titration of a Dilute Acid and Alkali (soluble base)
Procedure:
