I chopped carrots, peas, and a single tomato, arranging them neatly on the
cutting board. The repetition of the knife hitting the wood felt grounding,
each cut pulling me further into the moment. I heated oil and added cumin
seeds, listening to them crackle as they released their warmth into the
kitchen. It was a sound I had heard countless times growing up, yet it never
lost its comfort.
The vegetables went into the pot, followed by salt and a pinch of red chilli
powder. I stirred slowly, watching the colors deepen and soften. As the curry
simmered, I stood nearby, thinking about how many meals like this had
been made without any occasion at all, just another day, another effort to
nourish.
When I finally sat down to eat, the sky outside had begun to darken. The
curry was simple but complete, each flavor clear and honest. It reminded me
of evenings when conversation wasn’t necessary, when being present was
enough. By the time I washed the dishes, the kitchen felt calm, and so did I.
