Lahore’s Winter Veil: A Season of Smog
As winter descends upon Lahore, the city is enveloped in a thick,
heavy layer of smog, a haze that lingers low, stretching horizontally
across the skyline rather than rising into the vastness above. The
crisp, clear, and bright winter mornings are nothing but a distant
memory, now replaced by an oppressive murkiness that chokes the
atmosphere. Streets, buildings, and people alike are smothered under
this ghostly shroud, an invisible weight pressing down on the
surroundings.
The sun struggles overhead, desperately searching for a way to pierce
through the suffocating gloom. Yet, its efforts are in vain, every inch
of the 360-degree skyline is trapped under a dense, polluted cloud
cover. This sinister blend of smoke, dust, and fog settles thickly in
the air, a daily reminder of Lahore’s growing environmental crisis.
The pollutants fueling this seasonal smog are numerous: vehicular
emissions, factory smoke, and the burning of crop stubble in nearby
fields all contribute to the poisonous cocktail. Visibility is reduced to
a mere few feet, turning familiar streets into eerie, disorienting
landscapes. Roads become impassable, flights are delayed, and daily
life grinds into slow motion, as if caught in an endless haze.
Inside homes, residents struggle against the invasion of impure air
seeping through windows. The acrid stench of burning chemicals
lingers, making it difficult to breathe. Housewives, elders, and
children find the air thick with unseen threats, forcing many to
remain indoors. On the streets, people cover their mouths and noses
with masks, not just for warmth, but as a desperate measure against
the toxins swirling around them.
