○ A dam-like structure is built across the mouth of a river or an estuary.
○ As the tide rises, water flows into the basin behind the barrage.
○ When the tide falls, the stored water is released through turbines,
generating electricity — similar to a hydroelectric dam.
Tidal Stream Generators:
○ These work like underwater wind turbines placed in areas with
fast-moving tidal currents.
○ As water flows past the blades, it turns them, driving a generator to
produce electricity.
Tidal Lagoons:
○ Artificial lagoons are created along coastlines to trap seawater during
high tide and release it through turbines during low tide.
Renewable and sustainable: Energy is generated from natural tidal
movements that occur daily.
Predictable: Tides follow regular and known cycles, making power generation
reliable.
Clean energy: Produces no greenhouse gases or air pollution.
Long lifespan: Tidal structures can last for many decades.
High construction cost: Building tidal barrages or lagoons is very expensive.
