Explain why water is so important to Pakistan’s economy. [4]
Answer:
Pakistan’s economy is agriculture-based, and most farms depend on irrigation
from the Indus River System.
Water also supports hydropower generation, providing cheap electricity for
industries.
Many industrial processes (like textile and sugar production) require water.
Furthermore, water ensures food security, employment, and export earnings,
making it vital for overall development.
Q6.
Explain the main reasons for water shortages in Pakistan. [4]
Answer:
Rapid population growth increases demand for domestic and agricultural
water.
Climate change and irregular rainfall reduce river and groundwater recharge.
Siltation in dams like Tarbela reduces storage capacity.
Poor management and canal leakages waste large volumes of water.
Over-extraction of groundwater has caused depletion and contamination in
many areas.
