2. Anaam (6:75-79)
a)This passage discusses the theme of Allah’s Messengers, focusing on the creation of Prophet
Adam (A.S.), who was made by God as the first human and appointed as His vicegerent (khalīfah)
on earth. His creation signifies God’s special regard for humanity, as Adam was honoured above
angels due to his superior knowledge. This knowledge was a divine gift, highlighting that God
grants wisdom and prophethood to whomever He wills. The story also demonstrates that Iblīs
(Satan), a jinn, disobeyed God out of arrogance and jealousy when ordered to bow before Adam.
His defiance represents pride and disobedience to God. Despite Adam’s initial mistake after being
misled by Satan, God’s mercy and forgiveness prevailed — He accepted Adam’s repentance, as
shown in the Qur’anic verse: “Our Lord! We have wronged ourselves; and if You do not forgive us
and have mercy on us, surely we are of the losers.” (7:23). This passage thus shows God’s constant
care and forgiveness toward His chosen prophets and creation.
b)The story of Adam reinforces humanity’s spiritual connection with God, as Adam is the father
of all humankind. It strengthens belief in the chain of prophets, beginning with Adam. Muslims
learn that knowledge is a gift of divine favour and should be pursued with humility and
gratitude. The story warns against arrogance, pride, and disobedience, as these traits led to
Satan’s downfall.
It also teaches that repentance brings God’s mercy, encouraging Muslims to constantly turn to
Him for forgiveness. Recognising that Adam was forgiven after his mistake brings hope and
reminds believers that no sin is too great for God’s mercy. Muslims are also inspired to value
learning, avoid arrogance, and acknowledge God’s wisdom in elevating humans above other
creations. The story ultimately instills humility, obedience, and a sense of responsibility as
stewards of the earth.
