1.What lessons can Muslims today learn from ʿUmar’s sense of justice?
3.Write an account of ʿUmar’s contributions to the Muslim community in Madinah.
2.Why was ʿUmar called al-Fārūq (the one who distinguishes truth from falsehood)?
ʿUthmān (RA) was born in 576 CE into the wealthy Umayyah clan of Quraysh. Even before
Islam, he was respected for his modesty and honesty in trade. Abū Bakr (RA) invited him to
Islam, and he accepted without hesitation. He was among the earliest converts and endured
hardship for his new faith.
ʿUmar’s life teaches Muslims the importance of courage, truthfulness, and justice. Leaders can
learn from his accountability and simplicity, and ordinary Muslims can see in him a model of
sincere faith after once opposing Islam.
He was famed for justice, saying: “Even if a mule stumbles on the road in Iraq, I fear Allah will
ask me why I did not pave the way.” His humility was legendary: though ruler of a vast empire,
he wore patched clothes and ate simple food.
ʿUmar was assassinated in 644 CE while leading the Fajr prayer in Madinah by a Persian
captive. His death shocked the Muslims, but his rule left an enduring legacy of justice, discipline,
and accountability. The Prophet ﷺ had said: “If there were to be a Prophet after me, it would
have been ʿUmar ibn al-Khaāb.” (Tirmidhī).
