10-mark: Describe the life and struggles of Zaynab bint Muḥammad (RA).
4-mark: What lessons can Muslims learn from Zaynab’s patience and loyalty?
Zaynab passed away in 629 CE. The Prophet ﷺ himself led her funeral prayer, showing his
love for his daughter. Her life showed devotion to her father, patience in trials, and loyalty in
marriage.
When the Prophet ﷺ began his mission, Zaynab accepted Islam and endured difficulties as
the daughter of the Messenger. During the Battle of Badr, her husband fought on the Quraysh
side and was taken captive. Zaynab sent her mother’s necklace, given by Khadījah, to ransom
him. The Prophet ﷺ was deeply moved and released Abū al-ʿĀṣ, asking him to send Zaynab
safely to Madinah. Later, Abū al-ʿĀṣ accepted Islam and was reunited with her.
Zaynab’s life demonstrates the strength of family ties, patience in adversity, and loyalty to both
faith and family.
Zaynab (RA) was the eldest daughter of the Prophet ﷺ, born around 600 CE in Makkah,
before the start of Prophethood. She was known for her modesty and loyalty. She married Abū
al-ʿĀṣ ibn al-Rabī, a respected Quraysh merchant and nephew of Khadījah (RA). Their marriage
was strong, and although Abū al-ʿĀṣ had not accepted Islam at first, he remained loyal to Zaynab
and never opposed her faith.
