arat Salmān al-Fārsī (RA)
Background and Early Life
Salmān (RA) was born in Persia into a wealthy family of Zoroastrian priests. Seeking truth, he
left his home and travelled in search of pure religion. He encountered Christians and monks who
guided him towards monotheism. Eventually, he was enslaved and brought to Madinah, where
he met the Prophet ﷺ and accepted Islam.
Role in Madinah and Contributions
His unique background brought wisdom. At the Battle of Khandaq (627 CE), he proposed
digging a trench around Madinah — a Persian strategy unknown to Arabs. This idea saved the
Muslims from defeat, and the Qur’ān mentions: “Allah turned back the disbelievers in their
rage without achieving any gain.” (33:25).
Later Life and Legacy
Salmān became known as “Salmān al-Muḥammadī” due to his closeness to the Prophet ﷺ. He
served as governor in parts of Persia but lived simply, earning his bread with his own hands. He
died around 657 CE.
Lessons for Muslims Today
Salmān’s life shows the value of seeking truth, the unity of humanity in Islam, and the
contribution of different cultures to Islam.
