Sample Questions – Jaʿfar (RA)
10-mark: Write about Jaʿfar’s speech to the Negus and its significance.
4-mark: What lessons can Muslims learn from Jaʿfar’s martyrdom at Muʾtah?
Jaʿfar teaches eloquence in presenting Islam, steadfastness in exile, and bravery in battle.
Zayd accepted Islam early and was among the closest to the Prophet ﷺ. He endured
persecution but remained loyal. He was trusted with delicate missions, including delivering
letters and leading small expeditions.
He fought in major battles like Badr and Uḥud. The Prophet ﷺ loved him dearly, calling him
“the beloved”. Zayd commanded the Muslim army at Muʾtah in 629 CE but was martyred.
The Prophet ﷺ wept openly when news of Zayd’s death reached him. Zayd remains the only
Companion mentioned by name in the Qur’ān: “When you said to him on whom Allah has
bestowed favour and you have bestowed favour: ‘Keep your wife and fear Allah’…” (33:37).
The Prophet ﷺ named him Jafʿar al-Ṭayyār (“the one who flies”) and said he was given two
wings in Paradise in place of his arms. His legacy is eloquence, courage, and sacrifice.
Zayd (RA) was a freed slave who became the adopted son of the Prophet ﷺ. He was kidnapped as
a child and sold into slavery, but Khadījah (RA) gifted him to the Prophet ﷺ, who freed and raised
him. When his family came to take him back, Zayd chose to stay with the Prophet ﷺ, earning the
title “Zayd ibn Muḥammad” until Qur’ān prohibited adoption names (33:5).
After returning, Jaʿfar reunited with the Prophet ﷺ at Khaybar. The Prophet ﷺ embraced him
with joy, saying: “I do not know which makes me happier — the victory of Khaybar or the
arrival of Jafʿar.” He fought bravely at the Battle of Muʾtah (629 CE), holding the flag of Islam.
When both his arms were cut off, he carried it with the stumps until he was martyred.
