10-mark: Describe the role of the Muhājirīn in the early Muslim community.
4-mark: What lessons can Muslims learn from the sacrifices of the Muhājirīn?
The Muhājirīn show the importance of sacrifice for faith, patience in trials, and prioritising
religion over worldly possessions.
The Muhājirīn were those Muslims who left everything behind in Makkah to migrate with the
Prophet ﷺ to Madinah. They sacrificed their homes, wealth, and families to preserve their
faith. Quraysh had persecuted them for years — Bilāl (RA), ʿAmmār ibn Yāsir (RA), Suhayb
al-Rūmī (RA), and many others endured torture. The Prophet ﷺ and Abū Bakr (RA)
themselves migrated secretly, seeking Allah’s help.
The Muhājirīn became the backbone of the new Muslim community. They fought in all major
battles (Badr, Uḥud, Khandaq), gave counsel to the Prophet ﷺ, and spread Islam beyond
Arabia. Their sacrifice inspired later generations.
Allah praised them in the Qur’an: “For the poor emigrants who were expelled from their homes
and their properties, seeking bounty from Allah and His pleasure, and supporting Allah and
His Messenger — it is they who are the truthful.” (59:8). The Prophet ﷺ also said: “The
Muhājir is the one who leaves what Allah has forbidden.” (Bukhārī).
