7. Zaynab bint Jaḥsh (RA)
Zaynab was first married to Zayd ibn Ḥārithah, the Prophet’s adopted son. When their marriage
ended, Allah commanded the Prophet to marry her: “So when Zayd had ended his relationship
with her, We married her to you so that there would be no blame on the believers concerning
the wives of their adopted sons…” (Qur’ān, al-Aḥzāb 33:37).
8. Juwayriyyah bint al-Ḥārith (RA)
9. Umm Ḥabībah (Ramlah bint Abī Sufyān) (RA)
She was the daughter of Abū Sufyān, a leader of Quraysh. Her husband died in Abyssinia, and
the Prophet ﷺ married her there with the Negus as wali, who provided a generous dowry.
6. Umm Salamah (Hind bint Abī Umayyah) (RA)
A widow of Abū Salamah, she married the Prophet
after his death.
She narrated many ḥadīth and lived long, becoming a respected source of knowledge.
Impact. Her wisdom preserved unity at a critical moment, showing the role of women in
leadership and counsel.
Juwayriyyah was from the Banū al-Mualiq tribe. Captured in battle, she sought freedom
through marriage.
Impact. Her marriage strengthened ties with both Abyssinia and Quraysh, showing Islam’s
openness beyond tribal hostility.
Impact. Her marriage turned captives into allies, strengthening the community and showing
Islam’s mercy.
At Hudaybiyyah, when the Companions hesitated, she advised the Prophet ﷺ: “Go out,
sacrifice your animal and shave your head, and they will follow you.” The Prophet acted on her
advice, and the Companions complied (aī al-Bukhārī).
ʿĀʾishah (RA) said: “I have not seen a woman who brought more blessing to her people than
Juwayriyyah; because of her, one hundred families of Banū al-Muṣṭaliq were set free.” (Sunan
Abī Dāwūd).
Impact. This abolished the custom of treating adopted sons as biological sons, reforming social
laws. Zaynab was also known for her devotion and charity.
