Death and Legacy Lessons for Muslims Today Role in Makkah and Early Islam Role in Madinah and Contributions 4-mark: Sample Questions – Abū ʿUbaydah (RA) 10-mark: 1.Write about Abū Ubaydah’s role in the major battles of Islam. 1. What lessons can Muslims learn from Abū ʿUbaydah’s simplicity? 2. Describe why Abū Ubaydah was called the Trustworthy of the Nation. He died in 639 CE during the plague of ʿAmwās in Palestine. His death was mourned by Muslims as the loss of their Amīn al-Ummah (the Trustworthy of the Nation). He accepted Islam at a time when Muslims were persecuted but endured with patience. He migrated to both Abyssinia and later Madinah. He later commanded Muslim armies in Syria, leading victories against the Romans. He lived humbly, refusing luxuries despite being commander of vast lands. When ʿUmar (RA) visited Syria and saw his bare hut, he wept at Abū ʿUbaydah’s simplicity. At Uḥud, when the Prophet ﷺ was struck and two metal rings lodged in his face, Abū ʿUbaydah removed them with his own teeth, losing two front teeth in the process. For this he was honoured as one of the Prophet’s most loyal defenders. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Every nation has a trustworthy one; the trustworthy of this nation is Abū ʿUbaydah ibn al-Jarrāḥ.” (Bukhārī). Abū ʿUbaydah shows that true greatness lies in trustworthiness, humility, and loyalty. Muslims learn from him that leadership is a responsibility, not an opportunity for luxury. Abū ʿUbaydah fought in all the major battles. At Badr, he displayed the most painful loyalty: his father, who fought on the Quraysh side, tried to attack him repeatedly, and Abū ʿUbaydah avoided him until forced to strike him down. The Qurʾān revealed: “You will not find a people who believe in Allah and the Last Day having affection for those who oppose Allah and His Messenger, even if they were their fathers or sons or brothers or kindred.” (58:22) — scholars said this verse referred to Abū ʿUbaydah’s action. ʿ ʿ 2. Why is Abū ʿUbaydah remembered for loyalty to the Prophet ﷺ?
