ʿAbd al-Raḥmān (RA) was a wealthy merchant from Quraysh, born in 580 CE. He accepted
Islam through Abū Bakr’s invitation. Known for honesty in trade, he was among the early
Muslims who migrated to both Abyssinia and later to Madinah.
He gave up his wealth for Islam and endured hardship in exile. When he arrived in Madinah, he
had nothing, but he restarted his business honestly, and Allah blessed his efforts.
ʿAbd al-Raḥmān gave enormous charity. He donated hundreds of camels, gold, and silver for
campaigns. The Prophet ﷺ prayed for him: “May Allah bless your wealth and bless you in what
you give and keep.” (Bukhārī). He freed slaves and supported the poor. Despite wealth, he lived
simply and humbly.
al-Zubayr was killed in 656 CE during the political turmoil following ʿUthmān’s death. His son
ʿAbdullāh ibn al-Zubayr later became a famous leader. al-Zubayr’s legacy is courage, loyalty, and
sacrifice for Islam.
He shows that faith requires firmness under persecution, bravery in defence of truth, and loyalty
to the Prophet ﷺ above all else.
