He fought as a Muslim in battles like Yarmūk, against the Byzantines, and supported the

Sample Questions – Abū Sufyān
10-mark: Write about the life of Abū Sufyān and his eventual acceptance of Islam.
4-mark: What lesson can Muslims learn from the Prophet’s forgiveness of Abū Sufyān?
He died around 652 CE, remembered as one who moved from being a fierce enemy to a
supporter of Islam. His story reflects the Qur’ān’s principle: “Perhaps Allah will bring about
affection between you and those you hold as enemies. And Allah is Powerful; Allah is
Forgiving, Merciful.” (60:7).
After the conquest of Makkah in 630 CE, Abū Sufyān accepted Islam. Although his conversion
came late, the Prophet ﷺ forgave him and honoured him by declaring: “Whoever enters the
house of Abū Sufyān is safe.” (Ibn Hishām).
Abū Sufyān was a leading Quraysh noble and chief of Makkah, initially one of the greatest
opponents of Islam. He led Quraysh armies at Uḥud and the Trench. He fought fiercely against
Muslims for years.
Abū Sufyān’s life shows that even the strongest enemy of Islam can change and that forgiveness
is central in Islam.
