3.What lessons can Muslims learn from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān’s use of wealth?
His life shows that wealth can be a blessing if used for Allah’s sake. Muslims learn generosity,
humility, and honest trade.
He fought at Badr, Uḥud, Khandaq, and other battles. The Prophet ﷺ said: “O Allah, answer
Saʿd when he calls upon You.” (Tirmidhī). At Uḥud, Saʿd’s arrows were crucial in defending the
Prophet ﷺ. Later, he commanded Muslim armies in Persia. At the Battle of Qādisiyyah (636
CE), his leadership led to the defeat of the Persian Empire and the conquest of Iraq. He founded
the city of Kūfa as a garrison town.
Saʿd (RA) was from the Banū Zuhrah clan, related to the Prophet ﷺ through his mother. Born
around 595 CE, he accepted Islam young. He was among the first ten Muslims.
He endured persecution for Islam, but was firm in faith. He was the first to shed blood in
defence of Islam when he struck a Makkan idolater who insulted Muslims. He became known as
one of the fiercest warriors.
He fought in all major battles, including Badr and Uḥud. After ʿUmar’s assassination, he was one
of the six Companions appointed to choose the next Caliph and was instrumental in the
selection of ʿUthmān. He died in 652 CE, wealthy but remembered for using his wealth for
Islam.
