Jihad (Struggle in the way of Allah)
“Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and beautiful preaching and
argue with them in ways that are best.”
● The Prophet (SAW) said that a bold truthful word spoken before an
oppressive ruler is a high form of jihad.
3. Jihad by the pen / by knowledge (Jihad bil-qalam / bil-ilm):
● is scholarly struggle: researching, explaining, defending and publishing the
true message of Islam, correcting misconceptions, and refuting lies.
● This intellectual effort is highly honoured in Islam; as one saying puts it, “the
ink of the scholar is holier than the blood of a martyr.”
4. Jihad by the hand (Jihad bil-yad):
● Is practical action rather than speech: charitable work, helping the needy,
performing Hajj or Umrah, saving lives, and other physical deeds that serve
people and uphold justice.
● These concrete acts overlap with duties like zakat and are considered a form
of striving in Allah’s way.
Jihad against one’s self (Jihad al-Nafs or the “greater jihad”):
● It is the inward struggle between good and evil.
● It involves disciplining the soul, resisting un-Islamic desires and the
whisperings of Shaytān, and developing patience and firm faith in Allah.
● This internal jihad has two stages:
●
First, striving to remove doubts born of ignorance or misinterpretation until
one reaches certainty.
Second, striving to control corrupt desires, which produces patience and
spiritual success.
●
2. Jihad of the tongue (Jihad bil-lisan):
Means speaking and upholding the truth, exposing falsehood, calling people
to Allah with wisdom and good speech, and teaching others about Islam.
The Qur’an instructs:
Jihad is an Arabic term meaning “to strive” or “work hard for something”; in Islam it
refers to every activity and movement in the way of Allah (SWT) — a general concept
of acting for Islam rather than simply “war.” Fighting in the cause of Allah is one form
of jihad, but the term primarily covers all efforts to spread, defend and live by Islamic
teachings. The Types of Jihad are:
