Saʿd retired to Madinah and lived simply, passing away in 674 CE. He was buried in Baqīʿ. His
legacy is bravery, leadership, and answered prayers.
Saʿīd ibn Zayd (RA) was born into the noble Quraysh clan of Banū Adī around 593 CE. He was
the brother-in-law of ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (RA), being married to Umar’s sister Fāṭimah bint
al-Khaṭṭāb. He grew up in a household that inclined towards monotheism even before Islam, as
his father Zayd ibn ʿAmr was known to have rejected idol-worship. Saʿīd was among the earliest
to embrace Islam after hearing the Prophet ﷺ preach in Makkah.
Accepting Islam brought him persecution. Alongside his wife, he was harassed by ʿUmar before
his conversion. In fact, it was while confronting Saʿīd and his wife that ʿUmar read Sūrah Ṭāhā
in their home, leading to his own acceptance of Islam. Saʿīd thus played a key role in that pivotal
moment.
