2. Shirk in the Worship of Allah
“I am your Lord, Most High.” (79:24)
“He does not beget, nor is He begotten.” (112:3)
1. Shirk in the Existence or Lordship of Allah
This shirk also includes Atheism, which denies Allah’s existence.
Pharaoh committed it when he declared to the people:
“Allah forgives not that partners should be set up with Him, but He forgives
anything else to whom He pleases.” (4:48)
Believing that nature itself is God, or that God lives within His creation, also
falls under this category, as Allah is beyond all creation and comparison.
This form of shirk means performing acts of worship or devotion for anyone
other than Allah.
It includes praying, asking for help, making vows, or sacrificing animals in the name
of anyone besides Him.
Muslims should only invoke and rely upon Allah, as only He has the power to
grant needs and respond to prayers.
Some people fall into this shirk by praying to saints or the dead, believing they can
help or influence their lives.
This type of shirk means believing that there is more than one creator, god,
or lord.
It includes claiming that someone shares Allah’s control over the universe or denying
His existence altogether.
Some people commit this by saying God has a father, son, or equal.
An example is the Christian belief in the Trinity — that God is the Father, the
Son, and the Holy Spirit.
The Quran rejects this false idea clearly:
There is no issue upon which Islam is so strict as the one of Tauheed (Oneness of
Allah).
The opposite of Tauheed is Shirk, which means associating partners with Allah in
His existence, worship, or attributes.
It is the greatest sin in Islam and the only sin Allah does not forgive if a person
dies without repentance.
Quranic References
“Surely whoever associates others with Allah, Allah has forbidden to him Paradise,
and his abode is the Fire.” (5:72)
All three kinds of shirk must be avoided, as they destroy the very foundation of faith.
