Sample Questions – Ibn Masʿūd (RA)
10-mark: Describe the role of Ibn Masʿūd in preserving and teaching the Qur’an.
4-mark: What lessons can Muslims learn from Ibn Masʿūd’s love of the Qur’an?
He died around 653 CE. His students spread Qur’anic knowledge across Iraq and beyond.
Ibn Masʿūd’s life shows that closeness to the Qur’an is open to all, regardless of social class.
He fought in major battles and migrated to both Abyssinia and Madinah. In later years, he was
sent to Kūfa by ʿUmar as a teacher, where he shaped the recitation of thousands.
Though not a scribe in the sense of writing, he was one of the foremost memorizers and reciters
of Qur’an. The Prophet ﷺ once asked him to recite, and Ibn Masʿūd recited until the Prophet’s
eyes filled with tears (Bukhārī). His deep understanding of the Qur’an made him an authority in
tafsīr.
