(Head of Government)
On March 22, 1958, Iskander Mirza imposed Martial Law as
President, abrogating the Constitution, and made General Ayub Khan
Chief Martial Law Administrator.
General Ayub Khan overthrew Mirza’s Presidency on October 27, 1958,
through a military Coup, and declared himself President and Head of
Government (did not have a Prime Minister) while still holding powers of
Chief Martial Law Administrator.
Ayub Khan instituted a new Constitution on June 8, 1962, lifting the
Martial Law, but still remaining both President and Head of
Government.
He conducted elections in 1965, which he won, but resigned from office
on March 26, 1969. Shortly afterwards, General Yahya Khan imposed
Martial Law, becoming Chief Martial Law Administrator and took over the
Presidency.
General Yahya Khan resigned from office December 20, 1971, after
losing the Indo-Pak War of 1971 and Creation of Bangladesh. He
appointed Zulfiquar Ali Bhutto in his place as President and Chief
Martial Law Administrator, who appointed Noor-ul-Amin as first Prime
Minister, and then as Vice-President. Bhutto introduced the Constitution of
1973.
