Pakistan maintained close relations with Muslim countries, particularly Saudi
Arabia, the UAE, and Iran. After the 1998 nuclear tests, Saudi Arabia provided
oil on deferred payments to help Pakistan survive sanctions. Nawaz Sharif’s
personal ties with the Saudi royal family ensured continued financial and
political support, especially after he was exiled there following the 1999 coup.
Under Musharraf, Pakistan strengthened defense and labor cooperation with
Gulf states and continued to raise the Kashmir and Palestine issues in the
Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). Pakistan’s relations with Muslim
countries remained strong and beneficial throughout this period.
